With Sandra Carden, ERYT-500
& Dorothy Sirrine, RYT-500

November 15-17, 2019
Augustine Center Retreat House
Petoskey, MI

edited Fall+leaves+.jpg

There is nothing quite so soothing and healing as unplugging. Having no demands on you. Being. Being deeply restful and quiet– peaceful. Inwardly turning. Noticing. Completely appreciating each moment, just as it unfolds effortlessly, easily, unhurried and full. Serene.

What if you had the opportunity to be taken care of, fully supported, with nothing to do... but Be Here… Now?

Just before the Holiday bustle, please join Sandra Carden and Dorothy Sirrine for a breathing space. A weekend of resetting, renewal and re-union.

What?
Just before the Holidays you will take a breather from your day-to-day. You will enter into contemplative silence with a supportive and embracing group of like-minded individual. Maintaining silence is a form of Pratyahara, or sense withdrawal, which interestingly often allows for a heightened awareness of our other senses, grounding us in the present moment. You will eat well, sleep well, move your body and find stillness. You will learn more about your Self, from the outside in. You will leave refreshed, renewed awake and ready to engage in all the joys the season has to offer.

Where?
The Augustine Center Retreat House is a long-established spiritual center just north of Petoskey, MI. Here you will find a welcoming tradition of compassion, contemplation, and connection. Each person will have a private room and bath. Meals are delicious and locally sourced. All diet restrictions can be honored.

ABOUT THE PRESENTERS
Sandra Carden, ERYT-500
Sandra's yoga experience has embraced a wide range of teachers and traditions. Sandra began studying yoga in 1972, primarily in the Iyengar tradition. In 1974, Sandra and Field Carden attended the Naropa Institute, to study yoga philosophy under Ram Dass, and Buddhism under Chogyam Trungpa, Rinpoche. Here she was schooled in Vipassana meditation. From these early influences, Sandra developed a strong commitment to embracing diversity within the wider yoga tradition.
In the 1980s, she sought and embraced "meditation in motion" through the Kripalu movement, as well as with outstanding senior teachers of the Ashtanga system and other vinyasa styles. The 1990s brought a transcendent shift toward more therapeutic avenues of yoga, including her certification in Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy and Svaroopa Yoga. Viniyoga, Yin Yoga and Ayurvedic studies have been important influences. She has studied anatomy with Paul Grilley and Leslie Kaminoff, and human dissection with Dr. Tom Myers. The first decades of the 21st century brought deeper study of yoga history, in a two-year course on yogic philosophy and literature with Georg Feuerstein, Ph.D., through Sonoma State University, and with Cynthia Snodgrass, M.div., of the American Sanskrit Institute.

To "embrace and transcend" is to take in deeply, embracing the experience as fuel to transform inclusively and from within, as the sphere of understanding widens. In this way, Sandra Carden's UNION/YOGA is still growing, unfolding, and transcending, as we all are.

Dorothy Sirrine, RYT-500
Thoughtful, encouraging, and inquisitive, Dorothy is a strong believer that the mind-body benefits that occur on the mat are carried off the mat and into our lives. Thus the yoga mat becomes a laboratory, or microcosm, to learn about life, to slow down, and reset the nervous system. Though Dorothy is inspired and influenced by many different yoga styles, she is currently most inspired by Viniyoga, which emphasizes personalizing the practice to our unique situations. A lover of continued learning, she has vigorously pursued continued education. After completing her 200-hour and 500-hour level teacher training with Sandra Carden of Union Yoga, Dorothy has gone on to complete additional coursework in Yoga Anatomy, Yoga for Anxiety, and Mindfulness training, as well as other areas of interest. Most recently, Dorothy has applied her scientific educational training to incorporate and teach around the fascinating nexus of Yoga, Mindfulness, and Neuroscience.

Yin Yoga Certification

Childs Pose.jpg

Energy Body, Meridians & Fascia

With Sandra Carden, E-RYT 500

10 mornings – Monday to Friday
August 19-23 & 26-30
6:00am - 8:30am

Tuition $450.

Yin (or Taoist) Yoga is nature-based and centuries old. It is the process of introspection toward intelligent alignment and letting go to that, allowing holistic remodeling open new pathways. Yin calls forth the forces of nature to enhance the body’s wisdom and own healing.

Through accessing and releasing connective tissue in long-held postures of repose, the physical body is cleansed and rejuvenated. Realigned to best channel prana, or life force, the energy body is sparked to life. The coursing of prana through the meridians, or nadis, awakens kundalini, the impetus to expand and shine. Focused breathing stills and clarifies the mind, erasing negativity and doubt and preparing the way for visionary accomplishment.

Yin Yoga is a great counterpoint and enhancement to more muscular, aerobic, or Yang Yoga styles. Yin Yoga affects joints by increasing lubrication and range of motion, and bone density through evenly held weight bearing.

This 30-hour Certification course is designed for anyone with some basic yoga experience, regardless of strength or flexibility. Those completing the course will receive a certification to teach Yin Yoga, although completion may be solely for your own health, insight and education.

Please register here in advance — Scroll to August 19 and “Sign Up” for Yin Yoga Certification.

With Dorothy Sirrine, RYT-500

Saturday, August 10 @ 10:30am-12:30pm

$40.

This workshop is suitable for all levels, including absolute beginners.

Mindfulness, meditation, and yoga are increasingly recommended for people experiencing chronic pain as well as a wide range of physical and mental health disorders. Yet not all of these practices are equally effective at easing symptoms and it can be difficult to know where to start.

In this 2-hour workshop we will explore specific mindfulness, meditation, and yoga techniques that science is showing to be most effective at easing pain and discomfort. You will leave with accessible, non-intimidating ideas for starting or modifying your own practice.

*Please note that this is a not a silver bullet for curing and avoiding all discomfort but rather a systematic, science-based approach for essentially rewiring pathways associated with the pain response.

trikonasana.jpg

with Christen Landry, RYT-500

Saturday, August 4th

10:30am - 12:30pm

$30

An "alignment-centered vinyasa" approach offers the best of both worlds: a practice that’s fluid and fun, but at the same time, safe and sustainable.
In this workshop we will dissect the traditional vinyasa - plank, chaturanga, cobra, upward-facing dog and downward-facing dog – in order to discover and imprint the proper actions and alignment that build a confident practice.

At it’s heart, vinyasa -to place in a special way; to move purposefully and with intention - is what makes yoga asana so powerful, regardless of the style and pace of your practice

NEW TO YOGA or RENEW YOUR PRACTICE

A Workshop for Beginners

Not “flexible”, “focused” or “athletic”? No problem, YOU CAN do yoga! This workshop is for those who are new to yoga and want to establish a practice or for those wanting to reestablish their practice by revisiting the fundamentals.

This interactive, experiential workshop introduces the physical and philosophical fundamentals of yoga, and prepares you to confidently and safely participate in a basics-level class. You will be guided through basic asana (yoga postures), pranayama (breathing practices), and “brief” meditation, with the opportunity to explore personalized modifications and ask questions.

You will learn how to skillfully use yoga blocks, blankets, and belts to ease places of tightness and support yourself in a healthy practice.

Dorothy.jpg

Thoughtful, encouraging, & light-hearted, Dorothy is a strong believer in the physical benefits that occur on the mat and the mind/spirit benefits that we carry off the mat and into our lives. Thus the yoga mat becomes a laboratory, or microcosm, to learn about life, to slow down, and to calm the nervous system. Her classes draw from diverse traditions including Vinyasa, Yin, Restorative, & Kundalini. Having completed her 200-hour level teacher training with Sandra Carden of Union Yoga in 2009, she is also highly influenced by Sandra Carden's/Union Yoga's unique, alignment-based approach to hatha yoga. Dorothy loves to explore different approaches to yoga and encourages her students to do the same. She continues her training through workshops, conferences, yoga anatomy coursework, and mindfulness training.
